Let me state up front that I support Obama for president. My views on the nomination process wouldn’t change no matter who had the lead. The race for the Democratic nomination is going to be close. I feel that the results won’t reflect the desires of the people though.
As of today (20-FEB-08) Obama has the lead in the voting with 1301 delegates over Clinton’s 1239. The issue is that the Democratic party requires 2025 votes to secure the nomination. It appears that neither candidate will get the required vote. The problem is that if neither candidate gets the right amount of delegates (as determined by votes) that the race is turned over to 800 super delegates within the party. How can this be a bad thing?
Obama Delegates – 1301
Clinton Delegates – 1239
Obama Superdelegates so far – 161
Clinton Superdelegates so far – 234
See the problem here? The majority of the voting Democrats so far have put Obama in the lead for the nomination. So far the majority of the super delegates though are committed to Clinton. There are still 405 uncommitted super delegates out there but it doesn’t look good to see the majority of the decision makers, so far, aren’t following the lead of the voters.
And people wonder why I feel our election process is a mess.
